Research on English Translation Techniques and Application Strategies from a Cross-Cultural Perspective

GBP Proceedings Series, 2025, vol. 8, issue None, 114-121

Abstract: This study is grounded in cross-cultural communication theory and aims to investigate the core techniques of English translation and their application strategies within a cross-cultural framework. First, by systematically reviewing relevant domestic and international literature, we construct a theoretical framework centered on cultural-factor analysis and the decision-making process based on translator subjectivity. Next, we summarize key translation techniques — functional equivalence, cultural equivalence, domestication, and foreignization — and propose targeted strategies for different text types such as news and literary works. We then analyze typical cases of cross-cultural misinterpretation to verify the effectiveness of these corrective strategies. Finally, employing both questionnaire surveys and translation evaluations, we conduct an empirical study to examine how the application of these strategies affects translation accuracy and acceptability. The results indicate that a judicious balance between functional equivalence and cultural equivalence, together with flexible application of domestication and foreignization, can significantly enhance a translation's readability and faithfulness in the target culture. Moreover, crafting differentiated strategies for different text genres effectively prevents cross-cultural misunderstandings. This research enriches cross-cultural translation theory and offers practical, actionable guidance for translation pedagogy and practice.
