Nuclear terrorism and aviation: The threat is real

Journal of Airport Management, 2007, vol. 1, issue 2, 136-145

Abstract: Airport managers need to remain cognisant of nuclear threats from all over the world. It is particularly important to understand not only that such a threat exists, but how to best protect a facility and understand the expected effects of a close nuclear blast or radiological release on infrastructure and aviation assets. Airport management should also be aware of current techniques to detect the illegal transport of nuclear materials and devices through the transportation network, potentially utilising a general aviation or mid-size commercial airport as part of the supply chain. Airport managers at large commercial airports, in conjunction with the Transportation Security Administration, have specific protocols to follow. General aviation and smaller airports are more on their own, but nonetheless are still responsible for the security of their facilities. This paper provides background information documenting the reality of the current threat and recommends appropriate risk reduction analysis. Additionally, a summary of existing technologies is provided as well as some insight into potential technologies that may be available in the near future.
