Safety at regional airports in Europe: Regulatory aspects
Gernot Kessler
Journal of Airport Management, 2015, vol. 9, issue 1, 15-21
Abstract:
The top 600 airports in Europe are subject to a new safety certification regime, based on new European rules. This is a complex process, especially for regional airports with their specific market position. This paper describes the mechanisms introduced by the new rules that should facilitate the foreseen certification processes, addressing airports’ needs for both flexibility and continuity. It offers a first look at the initial experiences of the implementation process, as well as considering the possible future benefits and challenges, with a special focus on regional airports.
