EUROCONTROL and airports

Frank Brenner

Journal of Airport Management, 2015, vol. 9, issue 3, 270-276

Abstract: Air traffic in Europe is starting to grow again. It can, however, be expected that this growth will be constrained by the difficulties in expanding airports and the restrictions on their operating hours. There is a need both to make the most of what there is and to address the environmental concerns that are constraining airports. EUROCONTROL, the pan-European intergovernmental ATM organisation, is involved in a range of initiatives such as airport collaborative decision making, airspace planning, wake vortices, collaborative environmental management and environmental modelling. This paper considers these and, in particular, looks at how airports are becoming more interconnected, both with each other and with the network as a whole, providing more predictability and concrete performance improvements.
