Abstract: Airports around the US are experiencing immense changes, from more passengers and new technologies to increased demands for energy resources that are cleaner, yet reliable. In a time of dramatic change, it is imperative for airports to work with energy providers to find and implement solutions in the race for reliable and cleaner power amid widespread shifts in the energy industry. This paper details how US airports are preparing for the situation and innovating alongside their local utility and private energy developers. These airports vary in size, region, growth and project maturity and can thus offer unique perspectives for journal readers of all kinds. The paper details several case studies on how airports are navigating the new energy landscape. By tracing the chronological process from early planning to implementation, these cases can provide readers with valuable real-world lessons and best practices on preparing for ‘energy turbulence’ by engaging with utilities and private energy developers.
