Abstract:
The recognition that community resilience is directly tied to the ability of businesses to recover from disaster has spawned a renewed focus on how businesses, especially large corporations, manage the impact of disasters on their employees, facilities and business operations. As the number of worldwide natural and human-caused disasters continues to increase, the need for corporate emergency managers has never been greater. With this influx of demand come new challenges for emergency managers, particularly for those coming from the public sector into corporate settings. This paper draws on the author’s experience as an emergency manager at three Fortune 100 companies, and identifies a path forward for emergency management in the corporate world.
