Understanding common defects in historic masonry

Adrian Paye

Journal of Building Survey, Appraisal & Valuation, 2014, vol. 3, issue 1, 32-45

Abstract: This paper advocates an understanding of the causes of failure in historic masonry as the key to a successful conservation programme. Only then can a suitable repair strategy be developed to enhance the long-term and cost-effective performance of an historic facade. This paper is an excerpt from Adrian Paye's forthcoming book, and describes many common causes of failure. Photographs are of recent PAYE contracts.
