Abstract:
This paper explains the problems with design stage estimates of energy use of buildings and how they can be improved by using the methodology set out in CIBSE TM54. The paper includes a case study example of the University of East London (UEL) library, where an estimate of energy use at the design stage was used as a way of comparing and diagnosing the operational energy use. The paper concludes that better estimates of energy at the design stage enable designers and clients to focus on opportunities to save energy by applying design effort and budget in the appropriate places.
