Abstract: Deterioration of the built environment as a result of dampness has long been considered, with evidence of this dating back to Roman times. Much of the way in which our buildings have evolved is associated with the control of moisture. In this paper we review methods to prevent issues of moisture rising into walls by capillary action, both at the construction phase and also the evolution of methods post-construction.
