Abstract: The first part of this paper offers a brief overview of the history and use of lime mortars through time, from early history up to the present day. It describes the uses and methods of various intermixtures to ensure best results in building practices. It gives examples of the use of lime mortars in important historic buildings, and explains their advantages and disadvantages. The second part of the paper features two case studies that document and discuss the use of lime mortar in the repair of two historic buildings in Norfolk, England.
