Abstract:
Within the USA, the Democratic Party enjoys impressive and longstanding support from Black women. In the 2018 midterm elections, for example, 92 per cent voted for Democratic candidates. At the same time, electoral turnout among Black women was also considerably higher than the national average. Over the years, the contribution of Black women to the success of the Democratic Party has been so significant that these voters have been described as the backbone of the Democratic voting base. This paper recognises this significant contribution, but argues that if Black women are the backbone of the Democratic Party, then Latinas must be the vertebrae.
