Practical tips on grants: Finding, planning, writing, acquiring, reporting, assessing

Patricia Hewitt

Journal of Digital Media Management, 2015, vol. 4, issue 1, 55-67

Abstract: The Fray Angélico Chávez History Library in Santa Fe, New Mexico received a large grant to catalogue its extensive collection of historic maps from the Spanish Colonial period through statehood and to the present day. The grant provided the extra personnel needed to make over 6,000 sheet maps available to the public through its online catalogue. This paper offers advice and examples on finding and writing a successful grant application for any type of library or archival project. No matter how large or small the grant or how large or small the organisation, these practical tips will assist with finding, planning, writing and reporting for grants. Post-grant assessment strategies, as well as keeping the momentum going long after the grant cycle is completed, are also addressed.
