IP-Studio and reference architectures: ‘The end of the green cable’?

Abstract:
Replacing the unidirectional serial digital interface in live video production with IT networks is the next step towards using IT networks for file-based production. This approach not only requires standards for the packetising of audio and video and for synchronising a whole plant across jittering networks as a basis, but it also addresses more general issues concerning the deployment and management of such structures in a layered reference architecture. The management and monitoring of such structures will also raise new organisational challenges for the interworking of people, departments, related change management and training.
