Mass digitisation systems and open source software: A viable combination?

Abstract: This paper describes how the Institut National de l’Audiovisuel (INA, curator of the French public radio and television archives) and Ektacom (developer of video solutions) built a sustainable and efficient video digitising system for transferring the remaining of INA’s collection, using an open-source encoding solution. It details the challenges encountered and how they were overcome. It features a comparison of the different digitising systems that have been used at the INA. Finally, this paper assesses the benefits and the drawbacks of the choices that were made, in terms of cost, efficiency, reliability, sustainability and flexibility.
