Industry 4.0 and the GDPR: Two sides of the same coin

Journal of Data Protection & Privacy, 2019, vol. 2, issue 3, 201-207
Abstract:
This paper was written with the aim of providing an integrated vision of some of the latest key initiatives occurring in the EU market (namely the enablement of the digital single market, DSM). These initiatives inevitably lead to some significant transformations in the organisations and their processes, regulatory frameworks, workers and also citizens. Some initiatives have already been set and many more are on the list, but technological challenges, globalisation and the advent of a new industrial revolution make it difficult to understand the similarities between the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Industry 4.0, and the challenges they pose to all of us. In this paper, we intend to bring together Industry 4.0 and the GDPR and understand some unlikely similarities.
