Abstract: This paper explores the concept of the data trust model as a way of giving individuals control over their personal data and potentially being compensated for use. We will look at the benefits and challenges of this model and how it fits with current regulation. Finally, the paper provides examples of how this model can be used and explores the question of whether the European Union (EU) Trusts Project is considering the data trust model to create a marketplace using EU citizen data.
