Fraud dynamics in the card payments industry: A global review of the realities of EMV deployment

Journal of Payments Strategy & Systems, 2010, vol. 4, issue 2, 156-169
Abstract:
This paper reviews the global status of card payment fraud against the backdrop of progressing global EMV chip card deployment. It contrasts the obvious success stories of ‘chip and PIN’ at the points of sale in many countries with the global reality of inconsistent EMV penetration and its consequences for overall fraud reduction in relevant fraud categories. It also makes some recommendations on how to remedy the current situation.
