Choose wisely: Identifying the right technology to improve logistics operations

Hunter Yaw

Journal of Supply Chain Management, Logistics and Procurement, 2018, vol. 1, issue 3, 298-307

Abstract: There is ample demand for technology in supply chain management and rapidly growing supply of tools aiming to improve the industry. And yet, connecting the two in a way which truly adds value is far from straightforward. This paper aims to guide logistics professionals open to innovation driven by technology but eager to avoid common pitfalls. With the help of case studies and examples from the author’s own recent experience, it elucidates several guiding principles to help more intelligently identify the right areas to apply new technology and the right tools to use. By asking the right questions, logistics professionals can take advantage of a booming supply chain technology ecosystem without putting their existing operations and customers at risk of the unpleasant side of disruption.
