A 3PL’s role in perishable freight transportation

Geoff Turner

Journal of Supply Chain Management, Logistics and Procurement, 2019, vol. 2, issue 1, 84-93

Abstract: This paper analyses the role of third-party logistics (3PLs) in the perishable freight market and the value they add for shippers. First, it examines the hurdles shippers face today. With the widespread driver shortage, securing capacity can be a burdensome task for shippers, especially in a bull market, like the one we experienced in 2018. Secondly, the paper reviews the challenges of realising greater efficiency in the temperature-controlled market, such as the ebb and flow of capacity, controlling costs, managing risk, and keeping current with government rules and regulations. Lastly, it will look at the solutions that 3PLs provide, such as emerging technology, including new track and trace capabilities, blockchain, autonomous trucks, and the Internet of things (IOT), all of which have enormous implications for the future of Transportation.
