Abstract: This paper provides a playbook for practitioners to discover problems and diagnose causes systematically using business analytics. Built on competitive intelligence and benchmarking, the practitioners’ playbook presents a step-by-step procedure that tells managers which directions to look, what questions to ask, and what analysis (or actions) to take in each step, in order to identify the key challenges and opportunities for a company. We also challenge the conventional belief that problem discovery is less valuable and easier than problem solving by showing that it can be the other way around, using examples from the information technology, transportation and healthcare industries.
