Abstract:
Economic globalisation has been accelerating in recent times. Total volumes of trade and foreign direct investment have more than tripled since the 1990s. Yet no one is sure what the implications are for local economies such as cities, especially as the debate tends to be shaped by the perceived economic threats rather than the opportunities that globalisation presents. This paper pragmatically discusses the opportunities and threats and details new strategies for UK cities to create opportunities in the international economy.
