Target-driven brownfield reuse — a benefit for deprived areas? A spatial analysis of brownfield reuse patterns in England's core city regions

Abstract: Since the late 1990s, the systematic reuse of brownfield land, also known as previously developed land (PDL), has been a core component of urban regeneration strategies in England. This paper investigates the emerging spatial patterns of reused PDL and analyses to what extent this reuse reaches into the most deprived neighbourhoods as a general trend and in a number of exemplary urban areas in England. The underlying question is to investigate how far generic brownfield reuse targets contribute to increased physical regeneration in the most deprived areas.
