Montijo: Best practices in waterfront renewal

Abstract: The concern with waterfronts as public spaces has been playing an increasing role in medium-sized cities in Portugal. Urban renewal needed for the life of the city has started to include abandoned and redundant waterfront areas, turning them into vibrant places for residents and visitors. Montijo’s waterfront renewal plan started in 2006, with environmental concerns about the Tagus river water quality and the creation of green corridors in order to link the city and the waterfront. Old port structures and warehouses were regenerated, allowing retail and services to move near to the water. Water mill renewal allowed significant changes in the waterfront uses, creating a cultural niche that anchors this intervention.
