Mind the gap: Creating opportunities from empty space

Emily Berwyn

Journal of Urban Regeneration and Renewal, 2013, vol. 6, issue 2, 148-153

Abstract: The impacts of vacant buildings on the built form are significant. In addition, the function of commercial space in the UK is currently undergoing a process of change as the recession continues and the way in which people use town centres evolves. Similarly, with the economic downturn, the process for delivering urban regeneration projects has changed to be often a phased process over many years. This paper discusses the potential for temporary activity to assist and trial the diversification of the service offer on the high street and manage periods of transition throughout urban regeneration projects.
