Abstract:
Fostering a synergy between the present and the past Sofia has been a priority since the time of the ancient Roman Empire. Throughout its history Sofia has experienced several cycles of thriving development and decline. Since World War II, city planning has created physical and social division, which has translated into a lack of vision for the development of Sofia. The principal goal of this should be to ensure a better lifestyle for its residents and guests. The future development of the city must be based on sound urbanist principles, incorporating the breadth of the city's heritage and the natural assets, while being intrinsically linked to energy efficiency and ensuring the protection and remediation of the natural environment. With the integration of all parts of the city into a consistent whole, Sofia has potential to expand its functions and attractions and evolve into a true hub for the Balkans.
