Abstract:
A survey completed by operating theatre/operating room (OR) teams showed that a paper-based emergency surgery booking system was not fit for purpose, resulting in poor situational awareness. A business case was created for the purchase and implementation of an electronic system for a UK acute NHS hospital. As a result of the change, OR staff, surgeons and anaesthetists had significantly heightened situational awareness. While they faced a number of challenges, users felt that an electronic system was overall advantageous.
