BANCARIA, 2017, vol. 11, 20-29

Abstract: In the new context of retail payments in the Euro area and in Italy, which will be the role of cash? Cash has a high «social» cost not perceived by users but it can be advantageous for low-value retail transactions. The threshold of this advantage is progressively reduced by the development of alternative and innovative payment instruments. Consumers will determine the role of cash and other means of payment, on the basis of their relative convenience. On the supply side, Authorities will ensure competitive prices and a transparent and integrated market
