Abstract:
The Cajas de Ahorros crisis in Spain was mainly caused by the involvement of these banks in the financial support to property development. The approach adopted by the Authorities has shown the limits of the restructuring process. A key lesson from the Spanish experience therefore is related to the need of banking supervision systems able to ensure financial stability and efficiency and to avoid the «too big to fail» consequences
