The Enterprise from Management Point of View: Meta-Analysis (Internal Structure and Behavior)

Anastassia Stancheva

Economic Studies journal, 2009, issue 4, 67-112

Abstract: The paper studies the development of the management points of view about the enterprise, aiming at two more humble objectives – to follow the evolution to the contemporary management point of view about the essence and behavior of the firm, and to conclude which elements, processes and qualities of the firm contribute to or hinder the dynamics of the competitive behavior. The study consecutively discusses the holistic management models of enterprise, like the classic view of Fayol on the enterprise as a machine, the view of Chester Barnard on the enterprise as a system of joint actions, the development of the views on the enterprise as a social system and the behavior aspects in its interpretation by Peter Drucker, Herbert Simon, Richard Cyert and James March, Harold Leavitt, the organization projecting of J. Gulbright, the thesis of the strategic choice of John Child, the thesis of the conformity of David Nadler and Michael Tushman, the model of strategic adaptation of Raymond Miles and Charles Snow, the configurations of Danny Miller and Henry Mintzberg. Coordination, communications, decision-making and process of connecting with the external environment – adaptation, all these are outlined as main internal processes, through which the management is realized. The decisions of taking anticipating and return competitive steps (competitive dynamics) are made by the dominating coalition in the conditions of limited rationality, realizing the system quality “equifinality”.
