Bulgarian and Foreign Patent Activity in Bulgaria and Bulgarian Patent Activity Abroad by Technological Areas and Fields for the Period 2010-2021

Abstract: As an indicator of technological changes in the economy, patents also express the inventive potential of a specific country to use knowledge and transform it into potential economic benefits. In this regard, the main goal of the study is: to determine the state and dynamics of patent activity through an analysis of Bulgarian and foreign patent activity in Bulgaria and Bulgarian patent activity abroad for the period 2010-2021. The trends of technological development are revealed – by certain technological areas and fields and by patent-holder countries. Some of the existing trends in patent research and their role as an indicator of the rate and technological change in the economy are also considered. The significance of the study is to consider the role of patents in revealing trends of technological development and to lay the foundations for future in-depth research on the issue.
