Regional Economic Differences in Bulgaria and the Îther Countries Applying for Membership of the EU

Abstract: This paper outlines the effect regional differences have on economic development in national and regional aspect. A comparison of the current regional processes in this country to those of the rest of the pre-accession countries is offered. Some common as well as specific characteristics of planning regions in Bulgaria and the other regions at NUTS II level of the applicant countries are given. An assessment is made of the projected regional development and the special role such a policy is expected to play in Bulgaria is also pointed out.
