Build-up and development of the concept of property as an economic category

Plamen Tchipev

Economic Thought journal, 2023, issue 3, 245-292

Abstract: The paper analyzes the concept of ownership (property rights) as a fundamental category of the economic system. For this purpose, it traces the development of perceptions and understandings of ownership over an extended period of time and the subsequent shift of several paradigms alongside their respective economic theories – from those of Plato to Barzel’s and Eggertsson’s. This includes the emergence, changing, upgrading or dropping of one or another characteristic within the concept of ownership. The analysis reveals the relationship of these conceptual changes with the respective features of each particular paradigm in order to summarize those characteristics which most comprehensively define the economic category itself. Special attention is paid to the institutional nature of ownership, with regard to launching an additional and, in a sense, alternative analysis from a supra-economic, systemic point of view.
