Abstract:
The impact of petroleum subsidy removal on students’ academic performance in Nigerian schools is a crucial area of study that has significant implications for the education sector in the country. With the recent removal of petroleum subsidy in Nigeria, there has been a substantial increase in the cost of living, including transportation and food prices. These rising costs could potentially have an adverse effect on students' ability to focus on their studies and achieve academic success. This research aims to explore whether the removal of petroleum subsidy has any impact on students’ academic performance in Federal University Gusau, Zamfara state, Nigeria. The study utilized both the primary and secondary data, while, Chi-square test was employed as a technique of data analysis to provide a comprehensive understanding of the issue. Findings from the study indicated that the removal of petroleum subsidy increased transportation cost, reduces students’ participation in extra-curriculum activities and indirectly affect students' academic performance. Therefore, study recommends the implementation of targeted subsidy reforms like transport subsidy, discount and student support programs to mitigate the impact of petroleum subsidy removal on the well- being of the Nigeria University students.
