Abstract:
This study explores private sector climate change adaptation through three interrelated perspectives: adaptation-based strategies, sector-specific approaches, and economic contextualization. Motivated by the increasing urgency to address climate risks and build private sector resilience, the paper examines how various sectors are responding to climate challenges and how economic development levels shape these responses. Drawing from an extensive literature review, the study highlights key themes such as awareness-building, effectiveness assessment, and the design of incentive-based mechanisms as core components of adaptation strategies. Sectoral case analyses in forestry, tourism, agriculture, and energy reveal that adaptation measures are highly context-dependent, with tailored strategies reflecting the unique vulnerabilities and capacities of each industry. Moreover, the review uncovers a distinct divergence between developing and developed economies: the former prioritizes grassroots, community-led approaches, while the latter tends to integrate adaptation with mitigation efforts and policy-driven responses. The findings point to a fragmented academic landscape, with limited integration across regions, sectors, and adaptation frameworks. Consequently, the study emphasizes the need for more cohesive, interdisciplinary research to support comprehensive policymaking. It argues for incentive-aligned, sector-specific, and regionally adaptive strategies that promote resilience and sustainability. The significance of this work lies in its structured synthesis of a broad yet dispersed body of literature, offering actionable insights for both researchers and policymakers. Future research should explore the synergies between adaptation and mitigation, prioritize underexplored sectors and geographies, and support collaborative global efforts to enable a more adaptive and climate-resilient private sector.
