Abstract:
This aim of this paper is to emphasize the role of strategy within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in trade. First, some brief considerations are made on the particular traits of strategy in trade SMEs as described in various studies. Then, the most important strategic alternatives available to trade SMEs are analyzed in detail, according to various criteria. These alternatives are confronted with the empirical findings concerning strategic choice in trade SMEs active in Brasov city. The results from the empirical research undertaken before the start of the economic crisis show a somewhat different pattern to the strategic behaviour depicted by the literature. Nevertheless, the crisis has brought about some serious challenges for the strategic choices made by trade SMEs. The paper ends with some concluding remarks on the perspectives opening up to trade SMEs, in particular Romanian ones, in the new context of the European Single Market and the aftermath of the economic crisis.
