Abstract: Recent studies indicate that the expected process of market concentration in the dairy industry in the country was not confirmed after the deregulation that has take place since early 90s. In this scenario, considering the paradigm of Structure-Behavior-Performance (ECD), the research issue guiding this study is: Did the operating and financial performance of dairy companies in Brazil between 1997 and 2006 influence the levels of concentration in the sector? The indicators of operational and financial performance were calculated based on Fleuriet’s model (1978) and the analysis of market structure by means of the indicator of the estimate of the concentration ratio - CR (k) – of the sector for the period. The study is descriptive and the sample is intended, given the unavailability of financial statements for all companies in the period under analysis. The results of the investigation suggest that the performance of the companies, as per their operational and financial indicators, lead to changes in market structure and in the position of the companies – measured by the concentration ratio CR (k).
