Reading Selected Texts: Locating Dalit Identity

Abstract: The Dalit identity is closely tied to the experience of oppression and discrimination that Dalits have faced for centuries in India. Despite laws and constitutional provisions aimed at eradicating caste-based discrimination, Dalits continue to face discrimination in various aspects of life, including education, employment, and access to public spaces. The Dalit identity is also closely linked to the struggle for social and political rights. Dalit activists and leaders have fought for greater representation in government and other institutions, as well as for greater social and economic empowerment. Dalit identity represents a complex and multifaceted experience of discrimination, struggle, and resilience. This article examines the selected writing to understand the weave of Dalit identities and the process of Dalit identity formation in the modern India.
