Abstract: PETRONAS intends to significantly escalate the abandonment and decommissioning of offshore platforms between 2024 and 2026. An offshore platform is outfitted with the necessary equipment to extract petroleum and natural gas beneath the seabed. Malaysia’s oil and gas sector is significantly influenced and plays a significant role in the country’s economy by contributing around 20% of the annual GDP. Abandonment and decommissioning are crucial processes that necessitate environmentally conscious methods to protect maritime environments from the adverse effects of the industry. This study focused on analysing sustainable dismantling procedures, carefully evaluating the pros and cons of the process. The study shows an impartial assessment that considered both economic feasibility and ecological sustainability to ensure the protection of marine habitats for future generations. It is crucial to comprehend and address the environmental effects of the growing offshore activities in Malaysia.
