The Impact of Widowhood on Mental Health: A Study on Rural Widows in Rajshahi, Bangladesh

Abstract: Widowhood represents a social status that can significantly impact a woman’s mental health, particularly in rural areas with limited support systems. This study examines the effects of widowhood on the mental health of women in Parila Union, Paba Upazila, Rajshahi District, Bangladesh. The primary objective of this paper was to compare mental health status before and after widowhood and to identify the key factors influencing these outcomes. The research was conducted across 16 villages and involved a social survey of the experiences of 201 widows. The results indicate a substantial decline in mental health following widowhood, with approximately 75% of widows encountering various mental health issues. Moreover, 80% of the widows reported an escalation in the severity of their illnesses after widowhood. This study highlights the critical need for tailored interventions and support systems, emphasizing the importance of social support networks, economic stability, and individual coping strategies in addressing mental health challenges during this period. The research underscores the necessity for culturally sensitive mental health services to meet the unique needs of widows within their cultural context. Overall, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the mental health impacts of widowhood and advocates for empowering rural widows to achieve better mental health and well-being.
