Abstract: The study of the pre-colonial and early colonial periods in America (1400–1607) often focuses on European exploration, the Columbian Exchange, and the establishment of early settlements. However, there remain underexplored dimensions critical to understanding this transformative era. This article therefore explores the indigenous socio-political systems of the Americas before European contact, the nuanced ecological consequences of the Columbian Exchange, and the underappreciated role of non-Iberian European explorers in shaping early colonial dynamics. Through an analysis of primary sources and secondary scholarship, this article sheds light on overlooked aspects of pre-colonial and early colonial history in America, emphasizing the neglected contributions of the American Indians in America.
