Abstract: This study applies Erwin Panofsky’s iconological framework to examine five major Chinese calligraphic styles through a Systematic Literature Review of sources from CNKI and Google Scholar. The analysis shows that existing research predominantly focuses on formal features and symbolic functions, aligning with pre-iconographic and iconographic levels, while deeper iconological interpretations remain limited. By identifying this gap, the study contributes a structured and interdisciplinary approach that expands current analytical models and supports more nuanced interpretations within Chinese calligraphy scholarship.
