IMPLICATIONS OF OPCT FUNDS ON THE WELL-BEING OF THE ELDERLY MEN AND WOMEN IN KIBERA INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS

Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine the implications of OPCT funds on the well-being of the elderly men and women in Kibera informal settlements Methodology: The exploratory design was considered appropriate for this study. Random sampling was used to select 50 respondents (15men, 35women) OPCT beneficiaries who were not members of KDC and 20 members of KDC. Random sampling was ideal because each respondent of the target population had an equal chance of being selected. Purposive sampling was used to identify 5 key informants. Results: The study established that the OPCT beneficiaries tend to use cash for the most pressing needs such as food, rent, school fees for their grandchildren, and debt repayment. The effects of OPCT funds were felt at individual, family and community levels. Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: The government should allocate more funds to the program in line with economic realities prevailing in the country at the moment so as to encourage the elderly persons to create savings and to meet their basic needs adequately.
