Abstract: Is Microsoft a monopolist? The question reminds me of an interview Bill Moyers once did with David Rockefeller. He asked the banker if it upset him when people called him a "capitalist." Rockefeller answered" "If I'm not a capitalist, who is?" According to the Penguin Dictionary of Economics, monopoly is usually defined as "any firm dominant in a particular industry." Of course the more interesting question is what do the Microsoft, Intel, and similar monopolies imply. The application of standard economic theory to this problem, as Choi, Stahl and Whinston have done, may tell us more about standard economic theory than it does about information-sector monopolies.
