The Role of the Library and Librarians in Promoting National Security in Nigeria

Abstract: This paper examined the role of the library and librarians in promoting national security in Nigeria. The objective of the paper was to show that the library and librarians can contribute effectively in the fight against terrorism through effective propaganda; collection and dissemination of information; mobilizing the citizens through civic education and bridging of ideological and religious divides. The paper however stressed that national security is an all embracing term that deals with the protection of the interest of a nation. It is in this regard that the library has a social responsibility in national security. It recommended more government funding to achieve this task and re-organization of training curriculum of future librarians to include national security.
