Abstract:
A detailed description of a multi‐aspect relevance linkage information system, the MARLIS, with which the author has had considerable experience. The system is important for the light that it throws upon the relations between the aspects of which every document is composed and those which are implicit in every search question. Relevance, therefore, is the link, or bridge, between the content of a document, or collection of documents, and the question in the mind of the searcher. The author is of the opinion that MARLIS has achieved some degree of success in strengthening this linkage, and the ways in which this is accomplished are the chief concerns of this paper.
