Notes on the distinction between character recognition machines and perceiving machines

Abstract:
This paper attempts to develop formal distinctions between a machine that passively classifies its inputs into predetermined categories, and one that develops its own classificatory scheme. The greater generality of the latter as against the former is pointed out.
