Abstract:
Specialists at the Plastics Technical Evaluation Center needed a retrieval tool in their field of technology. An index was developed which consists of a list of precoordinated subject terms, machine arranged and printed. The index is property and use oriented. In contrast with uniterms, coordinated terms have fewer postings per term; hence, desired indexing depth can be achieved with only about eight postings per document. We believe this type of index to be ideal for limited collections. It is speedy and economical. However, vocabulary control needs refinement.
