SDI: A program for public libraries

Abstract:
Algorithms are described for the selective dissemination of information associated with both fiction and non‐fiction holdings, and the use of a well‐established classification scheme as a search medium is discussed. It is shown that the classification scheme can be used as a code which will describe the users' interests and which will also allow for the selection of the appropriate generic levels of information. This coded information can then be stored on an interest profile sheet and used as the basis for search logic. A program of this type can be used to provide either retrospective or current awareness searches.
