A quantitative comparison of conventional information compression techniques in dental literature

Kenneth C. Lynn

American Documentation, 1969, vol. 20, issue 2, 149-151

Abstract: An actual word count was made of 93 articles from the dental literature and compared with their homo‐morphic transformations, i.e., abstracts and index citations. It was determined that the average article of 1,963 words was compressed into an abstract of 178 words, an index citation with tracings of 30 words, and an index citation of 18 words. A mathematical model was used to demonstrate the homomorphic reduction ratio.
