Abstract:
This paper describes the Australian supporting mothers' benefit program and analyzes it within a model of the "parenting services" market. A parenting services supply function is estimated with quarterly time series data for 1973-85 and used to evaluate the effects of economic and program-related variables on benefit participation rates of Australian females. It concludes that program availability was the major determinant of increased female sole parenthood over this period, although "relative wage," "discouraged worker," and "displaced worker" effects were also relevant.
